EU Commission role to reach consensus, says Barroso
Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) - The role of the European Commission is to help
in reaching consensus in the European Union, EU Commission
President-designate Jose Manuel Barroso stated after talks here today
with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos.
Barroso, in Cyprus for a brief visit in view of the assumption of his
duty as the new President of the Commission in November, exchanged
views with President Papadopoulos on European issues, as well as the
Cyprus problem and the prospects of the Union starting accession
negotiations with Turkey.
German opposition drops plans for
petition against Turkey EU entry
BERLIN, Oct 15 (AFP) - The main German opposition Christian Democratic
Union (CDU) said on Friday it had abandoned plans for a petition
against negotiations for Turkey's entry into the European Union.
CDU leader Angela Merkel has dropped the idea because she feared it
might be misinterpreted, one of the leaders of the party's
parliamentary group, Volker Kauder, told ZDF television.

PARIS: French lawmakers clashed Thursday over Turkey's potential
membership in the European Union in a closely watched parliamentary
debate emblematic of the soul-searching the issue has prompted across
the Continent.
From geography to geopolitics, advocates and skeptics argued for three
hours over the pros and cons of starting membership talks with the
predominantly Muslim country on Europe's southeastern fringe.
But most appeared to agree on one thing: It was largely a symbolic
exercise since there was no formal vote at the conclusion of the
session in the National Assembly, France's lower house of Parliament.
Last week one would hardly hear the word 'Veto'

questions and debate from Cyprus media,
